About NERF

Students at the NERF lab

We aim to unravel the workings of the brain

Neuro-Electronics Research Flanders (NERF) is an interdisciplinary research center located in Leuven, Belgium. We study neuronal circuits and develop new technologies to link circuit activity to brain function.

retinal ganglion cells

We combine biology, physics, engineering & computer science

Our research focuses on how neuronal circuits are built, how they perform the computations underlying perception, memory, thought and behaviour, and how their dysfunction leads to disease. With a detailed understanding of these processes we hope to contribute to the development of new therapeutic approaches

From fundamental questions to practical applications

We hope to inspire scientists to simulate brain networks, but also to lay a scientific framework to develop novel medical applications for the diagnosis and treatment of neurological disorders.

2019 PhD class

Six labs, one team

We are a vibrant scientific community -- empowered by the excellence of our three founding institutes and building on a century-old tradition of education and innovation, all located in the heart of Europe.

Close collaborations make the different NERF labs one tight-nit team. Whether in our labs, at journal clubs or seminars, in the downstairs coffee bar, or at one of our happy hours, we share the same team spirit.

At NERF, we get to use the latest cutting-edge technology to record signals in the brain. What we have been able to do the last few years is absolutely amazing.
